We Covet: 3rd Uncle Design

In the September issue of Covet Garden, we couldn't get over Nancy and Laas’ amazing attic bedroom and bath. The transformation came courtesy of Toronto designers 3rd Uncle. Founded by Arriz Hassam, Paul Syme and John Tong back in 1993, 3rd Uncle is known for light, bright modern spaces. The name comes from a Brian Eno song, and like Eno, the designers make minimalism feel warm and inviting. (by the way, do yourself a favour and get a deck of Oblique Stratgies cards — you'll be glad you did.

Full disclosure: Tong is Nancy's brother and I (Rhonda) went to school with Hassam, but just because we may be biased doesn't mean we can't appreciate their body of work. The team is incredibly versatile, designing everything from restaurants (remember Gypsy Co-Op?) to furniture (the biscuit stool) to private residences (the kitchen pictured below). We're also partial to Hassam's own off-the-grid cottage.
