Being as this is a time of year for resolutions (and that I’ve spent the past two weeks indulging in unabashed debauchery) I’d like to take this opportunity to share my resolution for 2012 with you: drink more water.
Now, as I’m not really what you call a “low maintenance” gal, I’m partial to sparkling water as it makes me feel like I’m drinking something fancy. There's a whole big world of artisnal sparkling waters out there but I’m not keen on the price point or their eco-footprint (not to mention the fact that I don’t love lugging the cases up the stairs).
Luckily, we live in the 21st century and someone has anticipated my laziness/self-righteous-eco-mindedness, and created a do-it-yourself home system called Soda Stream. And even luckier for me, my sister bought me one for my recent birthday! Their system allows you to carbonate water at home in reusable bottles; it’s quite simple, no electronic components, just a CO2 cartridge basically and a nice streamlined “stand” thing. You fill up your bottle with water (tap or filtered), twist it in the machine, press the button for a few seconds and you’re all set. They have several different models—some with glass bottles, others with plastic and their cheapest model goes for only $99—when you consider how much a case of imported sparkling water costs, the unit will pay for itself in a couple of months. Plus you can get all sorts of syrups for it to make your own cola, or even tonic water (I have yet to try this but I’ll report back soon!). While for the foreseeable future I think I’ll be sticking to just the water to give my liver a break from it’s recent marathon run, I am already looking forward to mixing cocktails. Gin, lime, soda and a sprig of cilantro anyone?
